St Boniface General Hospital

St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg was established by the “Grey Nuns” in 1871 and became the first hospital in Western Canada. We are a major referral centre for Manitoba, Northern Ontario and Nunavut.

There are 12 perfusionists on staff handling a caseload of 900 cardiac surgery procedures and 40-50 ECMOs each year. We also have responsibility for autologous blood processing, IABP, VAD, blood gas analysis and platelet function assessment. We maintain a daily and on call presence at the Health Science Centre providing autologous blood processing (trauma, vascular and orthopedic surgery), HIPEC and rescue ECMO services.

We run three cardiac ORs doing 4-6 cases per day. We are using Sorin S5 pumps, Medtronic Affinity oxygenators and Sorin Xtra autologous blood processing devices. We use Maquet Quadrox-D and Sorin EOS ECMO oxygenators.

St. Boniface General Hospital is an approved clinical education site for the Michener Institute and BCIT perfusion education programs.
